G.E. recently had a breakthrough with microholograpghic storage technology. the had a breakthrough that had a 200-fold increase in the amount of refelctiviness of the holograms. This put the optical media nearly in the range of Blu-ray drives and one step closer to holding the creation of data. These drives are supposed to be compatible with CDs, DVD, and Blu-ray media. These new discs could possibly hold 500 GB if they were to launch, and they would be less then 10 cents a gigabyte.
This relates to informatics because it is technology and informatics deals with everything that is technology, plus these new discs could open up a whole new list of microstorge.
I think that this is really cool, especially since I’m a little bit of a Star Wars nerd and this just makes it more like we are stepping into the future. Hopefully they are able to make this usable because I know that I will be getting one.
