Soak Up The Sun!
February 21, 2009
Samsung has recently released a cell phone that is made of recycled plastic from plastic water bottles and runs off of solar energy. For all of you that are highly eco-friendly this is definitely the cell phone for you! It’s called the Samsung Blue Earth, it hasn’t been disclosed what carrier it will be sent to or the price just yet. This device is a touchscreen phone with a solar panel on its back that will allow for enough energy for phone calls to be made, but will also come with a battery for stored energy for other functions as well as a charger. The Blue Earth is said to have video, mp3, bluetooth, e-mail, recording and speakerphone. It has USB connectivity and will have other nice features like picture ID and ring ID. It’s said to be launched within the first half of 2009 in Europe and Asia.
This is a great example of problem solving using IT because they[Samsung] realized that we have large problems with the damaging of our nation by pollution and global warming. Making cell phones from recycled plastic is a great way to clean up our landfills and make the earth a better place. The solar panel on the back is a great idea too. I have been many places when I wished that my phone would have a couple extra bars of battery and if all I had to do was turn my phone over and let it soak up some rays a little while for longer battery life I most certainly would.
This is a great invention, I hope it does well in Europe and Asia so the US can try it out! I would definitely check it out, I’m more of a qwerty person myself and so this phone isn’t quite for me, but if they made a 2nd gen with a qwerty I’d be the first in line to buy. Check out the pictures, it looks great. One thing that Samsung didn’t do was compromise appearance for efficiency and that is truly great.

The Unethical iPhone
November 18, 2008
Ever since the iPhone has appeared on the market, cell phone consumers around the globe have been conjuring up ways to relinquish their current contracts in hopes of getting an iPhone. I understand the desire to get your hands on the latest artifact that technology has to offer; however, I do not understand the arduous ways people go about doing it.
